Guilty ((Presume coupable))
A Mars Distribution discharge of a Nord-Ouest Films, France 3 Cinema production, in colaboration with Artemis, using the participation of Canal Plus, Cinecinema. (Worldwide sales: Films Distribution, Paris.) Created by Christophe Rossignon, Philip Boeffard. Directed, compiled by Vincent Garenq. Script according to "Chronique p mon erreur judiciare," by Alain Marecaux. With: Philippe Torreton, Wladimir Yordanoff, Noemie Lvovsky, Raphael Ferret, Michele Goddet, Farida Ouchani, Olivier Claverie, Jean-Pierre Bagot, Sarah Lecarpentier. One rarely sees what "faithfully modified" onscreen, however the true occasions portrayed in French pic "Guilty," with different nonfiction book compiled by the protag, are extremely harrowing that no addition of imaginary elements might have managed to get anymore dramatic. Story of the provincial bailiff jailed for pedophilia, though evidence is either nonexistent or contradictory, is really a stomach-churning thriller-drama hybrid by which scribe-helmer Vincent Garenq dissects among Gaul's most well-known miscarriages of justice with chilling precision. Local Sept. 7 release should screen extensively in Europe Stateside, remake potential may also interest purchasers. The film's British-language title is really a misnomer, since it lacks the qualifier from the original, which means "Presumed Guilty." This is just what befell Alain Marecaux (Philippe Torreton), a tough-working family guy who's obtained from his mattress by police one evening (in 2001, though this isn't specified) along with his wife, Edith (Noemie Lvovsky). Both of them are charged with being a member of a diamond ring of child molesters in Northern France and neighboring Belgium and therefore are locked away, while their three youthful youngsters are put into promote houses. Alain and Edith are separated the moment they're arrested. Because Garenq stays near to Alain's p.o.v., Edith and also the youngsters are rarely seen after that. Couple and most twelve others were accused by Mrs. Badaoui (Farida Ouchani), who stated she herself was guilty too. However the Marecauxs had never even heard about the lady. Though he demands on his innocence from the beginning, Alain is treated legally enforcers as scum. His supportive lawyer (Wladimir Yordanoff), who Alain finally reaches see following a first difficult round of interrogation, states he's best not telling his fellow inmates what crime he's charged with, though a minimum of within this tale, the males with whom he shares his crowded cell prove more civilized compared to government bodies. The rookie justice of the peace (Raphael Ferret) billed with running the analysis either does not appear to see contradictions between testimonies or dismisses apparent errors stated by Marecaux and the lawyer, using being an excuse that in that way, he's safeguarding children. Working from Marecaux's own detailed account of his hellish journey (he seemed to be a script consultant), Garenq sensibly keeps any obvious indication of the passing of time offscreen, to ensure that what originates feels as though a dreadful nightmare without finish -- as well as in reality survived almost 2 yrs. The load from the accusations alone are sufficient for Marecaux to have to sell his business and also the home. He listens to that his wife, who's launched earlier, has had track of another guy which his oldest boy has attempted to commit suicide. Stuck in legal limbo without any one willing to hear him except his lawyer, Marecaux finally begins a hunger strike -- after their own unsuccessful suicide attempt -- to try and attract the interest of individuals greater on the judiciary ladder. Torreton, inside a fearlessly committed perf, goes completely, recommending Marecaux's decency, outrage, hopelessness and lastly, mental breakdown as the possible lack of food not just wracks his body but additionally his brain. Ferret, skillfully cast for his innocent and youthful looks, is chilling because the bumbling justice of the peace, while Ouchani, together with her vacuous eyes, is every bit terrifying because the cornered lady who triggered all of the trouble. Technically, the pic is remarkably drab, further enhancing the claustrophobic and usually spine-chilling atmosphere.Camera (color, Panavision widescreen), Renaud Chassaing editor, Dorian Rigal-Ansous production designer, Yves Brover costume designer, Fanny Drouin seem (Dolby Digital/DTS), Pascal Jasmes connect producer, Patrick Quinet line producer, Eve Franois-Machuel assistant director, Maurice Hermet casting, David Bertrand. Examined at Venice Film Festival (Venice Days), Sept. 6, 2011. (Also in Toronto Film Festival -- Contemporary World Cinema.) Running time: 101 MIN. Contact Boyd van Hoeij at news@variety.com
